The AA 12-step model of addressing addictions is legendary. As legendary as the discovery of miracle sulfa drugs or the development of open-heart surgery. The 12-step approach takes its rightful place in the history and development of effectively addressing addictions. Additionally, regardless of the residential treatment approach, the potential role a 12-step component might play in aftercare efforts toward sustained recovery is quite large.
Just as the legendary discoveries in medicine have seen exponential evolutionary leaps in efficacy, however, addictions treatment has come a very long way since the discovery of (at that time) the only known effective antidote to addiction. Addiction theory and knowledge have evolved dramatically, developing protocols and strategies that far exceed the reach of earlier methods.
At Rio de Esperanza our holistic approach begins with a core program proven in mainstream scientific circles to be particularly effective in the treatment of addictions. This program is based in the science and art of addictions treatment using cognitive behavioral therapy. Wrapped around that solid core of treatment are layers of enhancement to treatment including gender specific groups, process groups, acupuncture, expressive arts, and individual therapy. Yet another layer involves an array of available integrated therapies such as EMDR, equine assisted therapy, neurofeedback, yoga, and meditation.
Though the ultimate outcome or ongoing symptom improvement state we all seek is abstinence, getting to and treating the core and causal disorders and thought distortions is by far the most meaningful and substantial method toward a foundation for sustained recovery – toward the realization of a new Life Circle.
